React Native vs Flutter: which should you choose?

This is the most common question we get on cross-platform builds. The honest answer is that either can build your app well — the right choice depends on your team, your UI ambitions, and your ecosystem needs.

In short: Both ship iOS and Android from one codebase and both are excellent. Choose React Native if your team knows JavaScript, you want the largest ecosystem, and you lean on native UI components. Choose Flutter if you want pixel-precise custom UI and consistent rendering on every device. We build production apps in both and recommend the fit, not a house default.

React Native vs Flutter

React Native

JavaScript/TypeScript framework that renders with native components. Backed by Meta and a massive ecosystem.

Best for

  • Teams that already know JavaScript or React
  • Apps that lean on standard, native-feeling UI
  • Access to the largest third-party library ecosystem
  • Sharing code and skills with a React web app

Trade-offs

  • Heavy custom UI can need native modules
  • The JS bridge can add overhead for very intensive graphics

Flutter

Dart framework that draws its own UI, giving identical rendering across devices. Backed by Google.

Best for

  • Apps with a bespoke, brand-precise custom UI
  • Consistent look and feel on every device and OS version
  • Rich animation and motion as a core part of the design
  • Strong performance for graphics-heavy interfaces

Trade-offs

  • Dart is a smaller talent pool than JavaScript
  • A younger (though fast-growing) third-party ecosystem

How to choose

If your team is JavaScript-first or you want the widest ecosystem, React Native is the pragmatic pick. If design fidelity and custom UI are central to your product, Flutter is worth it. We have shipped both in production, so on a free call we recommend the one that fits your product — then quote it as a fixed price.

Common questions

Is React Native or Flutter cheaper to build?

They are close. Cost is driven far more by your feature scope, platforms, and design than by the framework. Use our app cost calculator for a planning range — the number barely moves between the two.

Which performs better?

For the vast majority of apps, both perform excellently. Flutter has an edge on graphics-heavy, animation-rich interfaces; React Native is more than fast enough for standard product apps and can drop to native where needed.

Which does SynchSoft recommend?

Neither by default. Both are in our core app wheelhouse. We recommend based on your team, UI needs, and ecosystem — honestly, not to fit a preference.
